The famous villas of Bellagio

"In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Bellagio was chosen by the Lombard aristocracy as a place of delight. Amazing villas sprang up with dreamlike parks and Bellagio became known throughout Europe as “the little Italian Versailles". A visit to the villas is a delightful jump back into a past of splendour." Luca Leoni

Villa Melzi
Villa Melzi stands right on the lakeshore surrounded by a splendid park which was laid out at the beginning of the nineteenth century by the architects Canonica and Villoresi. It is considered the first example of an English garden in the area and contains several interesting works of art, architectural relics and rare plants. It has played host to, among others, Napoleon, Franz Joseph, Umberto and Margherita di Savoia.
Villa Serbelloni
Dates from 1400, with later modifications. In the eighteenth century the Serbelloni Dukes enlarged the grounds which reach across the higher part of the Bellagio promontory, making it a splendid example of the Italian garden with over 18 km of avenues and paths. The house has played host to the protagonists of history: from Leonardo da Vinci to Ludovico il Moro, Queen Victoria, Kaiser Wilhelm, King Umberto I, John Kennedy, and tens of other illustrious names.
Villa Giulia (Oliverio district)
This villa carries the name of the wife its first owner, count Pietro Venini, who had it built at the end of the eighteenth century. An enormous amount of work was necessary to obtain the view of both branches of the lake that we enjoy today. The house has had many owners, including the Belgian royal family, the prince of Flanders, and the polish baron Gay. It has been a hotel and today is again a private home.
Villa Trotti (S. Giovanni district)
This house dates from the seventeenth century and, in 1752, was transformed into a sumptuous villa surrounded by a wonderful Italian garden by the marquis Ludovico Trotti. During the following century one of his descendents, returning from a journey in the Orient, modified the façade in Moorish style and created an aquatic tropical garden

Villa Trivulzio-Gerli (Loppia district)
This house was built in the second half of the eighteenth century and set in a large Italian garden, which was later transformed into a splendid English-style park by the architect Giuseppe Balzaretto, who also built the Gonzaga museum. The park also includes the Romanesque church of S. Maria di Loppia.
